Tonight is the three year anniversary of http://www.toastlovecoffee.wordpress.com
I just re-read that post. If you scroll back to the beginning of the blog archive, you can too.
It was, and is, the eve of Holocaust Memorial Day. Today is the day designated by the international community in 2001, to remember and honour the horrors of the Holocaust, and vow, earnestly, ‘Never Again’.
That phrase, so easy to write, to add to a poem, to say aloud, self righteously in a speech. But, what, exactly are we talking about when we say ‘never again’?
Never again the rhetoric and nasty headline grabbers espoused by leaders to dehumanise others?
Never again the democratic election of a leader who will quite openly use others, any ‘other’s to scapegoat rather than take responsibility and look for collective solutions?
Never again ensalving other human beings?
Never again walking past and ignoring someone else’s pain?
Never again a family torn apart by war?
Never again a father mourning the death of his three year old son?
Never again the reporting of unnamed human beings, killed in their bid to escape to freedom and safety?
Why can’t we learn?
Tonight, I bring to your attention, with perhaps, more meaning tonight than it would have had three years ago, a quote from Hannah Arendt, a German Jewish Holocaust survivor who made a new life for herself first as a refugee, and then as a citizen in America (the irony is not lost). She became a well respected writer and journalist, and famously reported on the trial of Adolf Eichmann (who held a pivotal role in the Nazi regime). Amongst many important things, she wrote;
“The sad truth is that most evil is done by people who never make up their minds to be good or evil.”
Tonight I make an unapologetic plea to everyone reading this, and for you to please share widely; please, make up your mind, and be good.
Please, for the sake of ourselves, our families, our neighbours, friends, kids, kids’ friends, teachers, communities, and for the whole of humanity and our beautiful world…
Please, Be Good.
